Why braces?

A lot of people opt for braces as they would like to have a nice smile with even and straight teeth. However, for health reasons, it can also be important to use braces. A jaw with straight teeth ensures that you can bite well, chew, speak and smile. Some teeth positions can lead to damage of the gums, asymmetry in the face and deformed jaws. It can also be necessary for your health and in some cases important to wear braces.

The treatment

Below follows a short roadmap for braces treatment.

  • Intake and discussion of the individual treatment plan
  • Investigation (xrays, mouth examination, and creation of jaw and teeth models)
  • Placing of the braces
  • Check-ups (every 4 to 8 weeks) during the treatment period

As every mouth is unique, every client receives a custom-made treatment plan.

Intake

The purpose of the intake appointment is to give you the chance to ask questions about the possibilities. At the end of the appointment, you’ll receive a personalized treatment plan and a quotation for the cost of the orthodontic treatment you require.

Placing of braces

There are different kinds of aberrations which require specific braces. Each type of braces is placed differently. Below is an overview of the different kinds of braces:

  • Invisible braces (Invisalign)
  • Metal braces
  • Twin-block braces
  • Plate braces (it’s against the palate)
  • headgear braces

The most common form of braces are metal ones. Placed on the front of teeth and molars these are the type that most people associate with braces. Metal braces are a combination of brackets, archwires and ligature elastics. The brackets are attached to the teeth using a special glue. A thin metal wire called archwire is used to connect each bracket and ensure that each tooth or molar is guided correctly in place. Ligature elastics hold the archwire to the brackets.

Check ups

After the placing of your braces, you will need to attend a check-up roughly once a month with a dentist for orthodontics in Amsterdam. The purpose of the check-ups is to replace worn-out elastics, check on your teeth’s progress, and to adjust the wires attached to the brackets to make sure that your teeth are being pulled in the right direction.

Retention Phase

Once the dentist for Orthodontics decides that the treatment is complete, your braces will be removed. After that, the retention phase begins. It’s possible that your teeth might still move after the braces treatment. To ensure that the results achieved remain, we place a retention brace. This prevents your teeth from returning to the position they were in prior to the treatment. Retention braces come in numerous sorts and sizes. There are both fixed and removable retention braces. The dentist for orthodontics will decide which retention braces are necessary for you.

FAQ

The form of teeth, molars and jaw bones are partly inherited. Also during the growth period, certain habits can change the form and the condition of teeth and molars. For example, thumb sucking or pressing the tongue against teeth on a regular basis.

After the placing of braces, you might find that your teeth will be a little sensitive for the first few days. We advise you to eat soft food if that’s the case. You may experience soreness of the cheeks and lips in the first week after the placing of your braces. You can use dental wax to cover parts of the braces that feel sharp. This will be given to you by the dentist orthodontist after the placing of the braces.

During the regular checkups, the dentist orthodontist may decide to adjust the braces, it could be that your teeth will feel sensitive for a few days after the adjustment.

It’s best to avoid hard or sticky food. The braces can be damaged by hard food and it’s difficult to remove sticky substances from the brackets and wires.

With fixed braces, you can continue to do sport. If you have removable braces such as twin block braces we advise you to remove them before doing any kind of sport.

There’s a chance that after some time that a wire might become loose. We ask you to contact us as soon as possible to plan an appointment. This will allow us to quickly resolve the problem and have the braces functioning optimally again.

Reimbursement from Health Insurers

The braces treatment is not covered by the standard mandatory health insurance in the Netherlands. In very special cases health insurers will reimburse the costs, but this is mostly in the case of congenital facial defects or serious aberrations in the conditions of teeth and jaws.

If you have supplementary dental insurance, then treatment for braces is reimbursed in most cases. We advise you to contact your health insurer and discuss the treatment plan we’ll provide you with. This way you’ll be fully aware of any costs that you may incur directly that won’t be covered by your health insurer.
