It can also be necessary for your health and in some cases important to wear braces.

Placing of braces

There are different kinds of aberrations which require specific braces. Each type of braces is placed differently. Below is an overview of the different kinds of braces:

  • Invisible braces (Invisalign)
  • Metal braces
  • Twin-block braces
  • Plate braces (it’s against the palate)
  • headgear braces

The most common form of braces are metal ones. Placed on the front of teeth and molars these are the type that most people associate with braces. Metal braces are a combination of brackets, archwires and ligature elastics. The brackets are attached to the teeth using a special glue. A thin metal wire called archwire is used to connect each bracket and ensure that each tooth or molar is guided correctly in place. Ligature elastics hold the archwire to the brackets.

Check ups

After the placing of your braces, you will need to attend a check-up roughly once a month with a dentist for orthodontics in Amsterdam. The purpose of the check-ups is to replace worn-out elastics, check on your teeth’s progress, and to adjust the wires attached to the brackets to make sure that your teeth are being pulled in the right direction.

Retention Phase

Once the dentist for Orthodontics decides that the treatment is complete, your braces will be removed. After that, the retention phase begins. It’s possible that your teeth might still move after the braces treatment. To ensure that the results achieved remain, we place a retention brace. This prevents your teeth from returning to the position they were in prior to the treatment. Retention braces come in numerous sorts and sizes. There are both fixed and removable retention braces. The dentist for orthodontics will decide which retention braces are necessary for you.

Reimbursement from Health Insurers

The braces treatment is not covered by the standard mandatory health insurance in the Netherlands. In very special cases health insurers will reimburse the costs, but this is mostly in the case of congenital facial defects or serious aberrations in the conditions of teeth and jaws.

If you have supplementary dental insurance, then treatment for braces is reimbursed in most cases. We advise you to contact your health insurer and discuss the treatment plan we’ll provide you with. This way you’ll be fully aware of any costs that you may incur directly that won’t be covered by your health insurer.
